Voyage To The Planet of Prehistoric Women

From Wikipedia:

Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women is a 1968 film directed by Peter Bogdanovich. The film is an adapted version of Curtis Harrington's Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet, which in turn is adapted from the Russian 1962 feature Planeta Bur by Pavel Klushantsev. No footage from Planeta Burg appears in Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women that did not appear in Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet, and much of the dubbing is the same.

The Day of the Triffids

From Wikipedia:

The Day of the Triffids is a 1962 British film adaptation of the science fiction novel of the same name by John Wyndham.

Triffids are strange fictional plants, capable of rudimentary animal-like behavior: they are able to uproot themselves and walk, possess a deadly whip-like poisonous sting, and may even have the ability to communicate with each other. On screen they vaguely resemble gigantic asparagus shoots.

Bill Masen begins the story in hospital, with his eyes bandaged. He discovers that while he has been blindfolded, an unusual meteor shower has blinded most people on Earth. Masen finds people in London struggling to stay alive in the face of their new, instantly-acquired affliction, some cooperating, some fighting: after just a few days society is collapsing.

Freaks

I recall seeing this in the early 80s. I read that it was banned for being "disturbing". It's not. It's a great story about human marvels. From Wikipedia:

Freaks
is a 1932 horror film about sideshow performers, directed and produced by Tod Browning.

The film was based on Tod Robbins' short story Spurs. Tod Browning took the exceptional step of casting real people with deformities as the eponymous sideshow "freaks," rather than using costumes and makeup. Director Browning had been a member of a traveling circus in his early years, and much of the film was drawn from his personal experiences. He intended to portray the classic moral of how outer beauty does not necessarily equate to inner beauty. In the film, the physically deformed "freaks" are inherently trusting and honorable people, while the real monsters are two of the "normal" members of the circus who conspire to murder one of the performers to obtain his large inheritance.

Reaction to this film was so intense that Browning, famed at the time for his collaborations with Lon Chaney, Sr. and for directing Bela Lugosi in Dracula (1931), had trouble finding work afterwards, and this in effect brought his career to an early close. Because its deformed cast was shocking to moviegoers of the time, the film was banned in the United Kingdom for thirty years.

Happy Anniversary to the Neighborhood!

Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood is 40 years old today, and still airs on PBS, although beloved host Fred Rogers died in 2003.

From Wikipedia:

The first broadcast of Misterogers' Neighborhood was on the National Educational Television network on February 19, 1968. When NET ceased broadcasting in 1970, the series moved to PBS. The show would be renamed to its more-familiar three word title, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, in 1971.

Thomas Edison

Happy Birthday to inventor Thomas Edison, who was born on February 11, 1847. If he's had the foresight to invent a longevity machine, he'd be 161 years old today.

Thomas Edison received his first patent in 1869, at the age of 23. It was for an "electrographic vote recorder," which allowed a legislator to cast a vote for or against an issue by turning a switch either left or right. It was a complete flop, ironically because it was too efficient and interfered with the ability of pols to lobby for vote-switching -- something that was commonly done during the time it took to count votes by hand.

Edison eventually held 1,093 patents. Whenever you flip on a light switch, listen to music, or watch a video, Edison had a hand in it. Wired has a condensed look at Edison’s career. See a video of Edison talking about the light bulb.

The Blego Meme

Looks like I have been tagged for a meme! Caroline at Drops of Blood said she enjoys my writing. Huh? Well, it was a group notice. Anyhoo, here's how it goes:

First, the rules, as they were ’splained to me:

  • The person tagged must copy the word (”Blego”) and paste the definitions of the word contributed previously by the people who did the meme.
  • A link back would be nice, but not necessary.
  • The person tagged must then add his/her own definition in this format “yourname.com’s definition” and place your link. Being creative with the acronym is encouraged.
  • Answer the following questions.
  • Tag 5 other people to do the meme.

DEFINING BLEGO … SO FAR … :

  • Blego (evilwoobie.com’s definition) - n. an acronym of “blog ego,” which pertains to a blogger’s sense of self in the blogosphere.
  • Blego (Darkside-Dreamland.com’s definition) - n. a protologism combining blog and ego. Used to define the ego of a blog or blogger. Like personal ego, blego may be good or bad.
  • Blego (benbarden.com’s definition) - n. a toy for children to build with but with a B in front.
  • BLEGO (WoganMay.com’s definition) - abbr. Breaking Little Enterprises - Godzilla Organizations.
  • Blego (Blogosis.com’s definition) - n. An Eggo waffle and a blog mixed together. I don’t know what this would look like, but maybe I can come up with a prototype.
  • Blego (amid.com’s definition) - expression. “Bleh, let’s go!” If you’re being forced to go somewhere or do something, by your spouse or friends, just slur those words together and get “blego.” It is usually said after a big sigh. For example, “Do I have to? Hrmph! Blego!”
  • Blego (ScribblesAndWords.com’s definition) - n. The film that coats the back of your throat when trying to talk while crying. When Sally took Bill’s lollipop, Bill began to cry. Eventually he’d built up so much blego I could no longer make out his shouts that justice be served.”
  • BLEGO (DropsofBlood.com’s definition) - acronym. Acronym for an uncritical acceptance of people of all body sizes (and people with non-standard body part sizes) at sex parties (those things we always wish we’d get invited to). Stands for “Big? Little? Everyone’s Good! Orgy!” Example: “Put down that doughnut, Big Ruthie, and get on your fancy panties, ’cause we’re going to the Friday night BLEGO.”
NOW MY DEFINITION
Well duh. I knew what the word meant as soon as I heard it, and I hadn't even read the other definitions. A blego is a blog about Legos. The premiere blego is The Brothers Brick.

THE BLEGO FUN ISN’T OVER! HERE’S AN ORGY OF QUESTIONS

1 - Do you know what your blog is really about, and can you write a one-sentence promotional statement for it? If yes, write it here.

Miss Cellania is full of humor and links on a different subject each day.
Miss C Recommends is a linkdump of humor, information, politics, movies, and other stuff.
Neatorama has the neatest links and information on the web
YesButNoButYes is the greatest pop culture blog on the planet, or maybe not.
Mental Floss makes you feel smart.
I must admit, all of those sentences were written a long time ago.

2 - Do you join social networks to promote your blog? If yes, do you hope to find friends in these social networks and in the process get regular readers for your blog?

Yes, but it seems to be more trouble than it's worth. But promotion is half the game, so I play.

3 - Do you, or do you plan to, join ranking sites that put your blog in competition with others for popularity? If yes, do you plan to monitor your stats regularly?

I've done it, but they don't bring much traffic. I don't monitor them anymore.

4 - Do you tweak your blog often in accordance with the tips you get from blogging guide and gurus? If yes, list the bloggers you visit often to obtain these tips.

If I come across an article with tips, I read it, but rarely find anything new that I'm not doing already.

5 - Do you think of your next post even if you have just written a new one? If yes, list your inspirations for posting, and/or some routines that you go through before posting.

I have several posts planned out days ahead for my site. I collect links and jokes, and post them when I get enough material on a particular subject. I am a scraper, meaning I spend most of my time looking for stuff on the net. While I am collecting material for the blogs that pay me, I also find things that I can use on my own site. For the other sites, I am constantly searching for inspiration anywhere. I can produce the material, but I have a hard time thinking up a subject that hasn't been done recently.

Tag Time!

If you want to participate in this meme, consider yourself tagged.

Where I star in a romance novel...

I've posted before about Book By You, a service that plugs your name and personal details into a romance novel. They've got several stories to select from, and the newest is "Click on Love", about cyber dating. Now THAT's right up my alley!

Our irresistible heroine, Miss Cellania gives up online dating for good but her best friend Omegamom, secretly posts her profile on a website, and discovers a charming admirer that just might be her friend's perfect match. A chance real-life meeting with George Clooney the handsome, passionate new guy in town, divides our heroine's attention, and Miss is torn between instant chemistry that makes her knees weak and instant messages that speak to her heart!
Miss is persuaded to give online dating another try

Miss viewed Omegamom suspiciously, with a green-eyed gaze as she grabbed a chair from the kitchen table and joined her friend in front of the computer. "What are you up to?" she asked knowing Omegamom all too well.
"It's Discreet Dates dot com."
"Yeah, so."
Omegamom turned, with a mischievous grin.
"No, Omegamom! I told you, I'm done!"
"Okay, so don't get mad yet," she pleaded.
"No way, Omegamom! Never again! Remember all that talk about trying too hard?"
"Well, I didn't say don't try at all! I'm worried about you. You haven't been on a date in nearly a year-"
"Six months and I haven't had time. Omegamom, we have to get our new business off the ground," Miss protested, running a hand through her blonde hair.
Omegamom ignored her friend's interruption, not missing a beat, "Seriously, Miss, I'm thinking you're turning into a hermit and it's time to drag you out of your shell!"
"You're exaggerating, as usual. Besides, the memory of Melroy bringing his mother on our first date still haunts me.
"I think Discreet Dates can help."...

MissC and Hotlips212: An anonymous online chat

MissC: Why are men so infuriating?

Hotlips212: If you can tell me why women are so bewildering then maybe I can answer your question.

Miss gazed at the screen of her laptop as she sat at the head of her bed, still dressed in her robe, sipping coffee.

MissC: The age-old argument. I guess we'll never figure it out.

Hotlips212: What fun would it be if we did? I mean if I knew the mystery of why the sight of a beautiful woman makes me weak and warm all over, or why her scent and the touch of her velvety skin on mine drives me wild with desire, maybe the magic would be lost.

Stirred by his words Miss inhaled deeply before responding.

MissC: Good point, but I still hate men sometimes.

Hotlips212: There's a fine line between love and hate, MissC. You've just got to figure out how, and when, to cross it.

Miss and George: A chance meeting at a coffee shop

"Can I get your coffee?" George offered, his striking brown eyes locked onto hers as they both moved to the front of the line.
"No, really that's okay. You've done enough. Thanks for helping things along. I would've been stuck in this line forever."
"Nonsense," he replied, and then spoke to the barista. "Large coffee, black please, and a..."
"I'll have the same with a little cream," she said, pushing an errant strand of blonde hair from her forehead.
When the barista turned to prepare their drinks, George offered his hand to Miss. "George Clooney."
"Nice to meet you, Mr. Clooney. I guess chivalry isn't dead. I'm Miss Cellania," she replied taking his hand in hers and feeling her skin warm to his touch. Her green eyes conveyed a spark from within and Miss felt her heart skip a beat at the sight of his smile.
"Um, I was just wondering," he hesitated, "would you like to meet for coffee again here tomorrow? A little earlier and we could probably get a table."
Miss smiled, pleasantly surprised by the invitation. In contrast to her usual cautionary nature, she decided to take a chance - there was just something about this man...

A little heat in the back of a limo...
George slid in beside Miss in the back of the silver, stretch limousine and within moments they were locked in a passionate kiss. Briefly pulling away from him Miss reached to the door and hit the button raising the glass partition and then returned to run her fingers through his salt and pepper hair.
"Its been a long time, George," she whispered seductively, as she pressed her parted lips against his. He felt the smooth wetness of the gloss from her lips reignite the stirring in his body that had been smoldering all night. His desire could not be contained and he reached up pulling her closer, feeling her silky smoothness. Not to be outdone, Miss removed his bow tie and began to quickly unfasten the buttons on his shirt as George lifted her dress, and pulled her over him, her legs straddling his lap.
"Miss," George moaned raggedly, as she released the button securing his pants...

DANG! Just when it was starting to get good!

Blogroll Amnesty Day

A year ago today, there was a bit of a shakeup in the political Blogophere when Atrios declared Blogroll Amnesty Day. He then dumped a large part of his blogroll, which set off some resentment and hard feelings among those that were dropped and others who thought it an underhanded and totally misnamed tactic. A year later, Jon Swift encourages everyone to open up their blogrolls to give smaller blogs an opportunity to be publicized.

I am all about links here at Miss C Recommends. I want to expand my own sphere of information, and try to check out blogs I’ve never read before as much as I can. You should, too. All that smaller blogs are asking is that you try them out. They will sink or swim according to whether they connect with readers. If you find something you like, you’d certainly want to recommend them. If you want to check out some new political blogs you’ve never encountered before, there are recommendations at Simply Left Behind today. Jon Swift is posting links to many Blogroll Amnesty Day posts which contain more link lists. Skippy the Bush Kangaroo has quite a few posts on this.
